Article XII. Outcross Program
Section A. Objective of the Outcross Program
- To expand the gene pool while retaining the Shiloh “type”, health, and
temperament. - No dog will be considered that possesses health problems, or the conformation faults we seek to improve in Shiloh Shepherds. It is our goal to bring dogs into the gene pool that meet the above objectives of the Outcross Program.
Section B. Requirements for Outcross (Non-Shiloh Shepherd)
- Must be free from any serious/DQ Shiloh faults as according to breed standard. The exception to this rule is height, as the standard GSD height maximum is beneath our height minimum.
- Should not have excessive rear angulation, or sloping top line- — should be as close to Shiloh Shepherd breed standard as possible.
- Should not have the same fault as the Shiloh it is being bred to.
- Must have the following certificates/tests to ensure the health of the dog we are
bringing into our gene pool:- Hips
- OFA rating of Good or Excellent.
- OVC Normal.
- PennHIP scores of less than .50 with no DJD.
- Equivalent rating of OFA Excellent of Good from a foreign registry.
- Must be in good health and free from any obvious genetically linked disease.
- The breeder of the outcross dog must be asked if any of the following health problems are evident in their dog’s lines:
- Panosteitis
- Umbilical Hernias
- Perianal Fistulas
- Bloat
- Cancer
- Mega Esophagus
- Epilepsy
- SAS
- PRAA
- PDA
- Cataracts
- Pannus
- Degenerative Myelopathy
- The breeder of the outcross dog must be asked if any of the following health problems are evident in their dog’s lines:
- Hips
- Recommended Testing
- Blood Tests
- EPI
- full Thyroid panel
- Von Wilibrands Disease
- Physical
- OFA Normal Elbow Certification
- OFA Heart Certification
- CERF
- Blood Tests
- Pictures and Pedigrees
- Pictures (head, sides, front and rear) of the dog.
- Video of movement of dog (front, rear and side), requested
- A 4-Generation pedigree, 7-Generation is preferred.
- Pictures of sire and dam.
- Pictures of grandparents, siblings, or offspring are highly recommended.
- LMI highly recommended (is included on pedigree of European dogs).
Section C. Requirements for the Shiloh Shepherd Used in the Outcross Program
- Must have obtained adult breeding registration papers from TSSR.
- Should not have the same fault(s) as the outcross dog it is being bred to.
- Must be free from any health problems or genetic disease.
- Should provide LMI information.
Section D. Breeder Requirements
- Must be a TSSR breeder in good standing, and a signer of the Breeder’s Code of Ethics.
- Must request approval from the Board of Directors.
- Must provide all necessary information about dog to be used as outcross, and the Shiloh Shepherd to be used.
- Sign TSSR statement agreeing to the following:
- New owners will be told puppies are part of the Outcross Program, and as such have limited registration and showing privileges as according to the Outcross program.
- Will strive to attain 100% LMI and must be willing to disclose all information on the progress of the litter, as well as provide pictures and written updates at 12 and 24 months of age. Any LMI/LMX information after this age should be reported to the registrar for documentation in the OTX records.
- All of the above are required for breeders of OTX Level 1 and Level 2 litters.
Section E. The Program
- The Registrar will designate the letter “O” as the first character in the registration number of any outcross offspring. The second character would represent the breedable status as “R” restricted, or “N” non breeding. The third character would be a number from 1-4 showing the generation of the outcross.
- If the specific dog is the result of breeding two outcross lines, the lowest generation number will be used in the registration number these dogs will have numbers starting with DO (Double Outcross).
- Example of a first generation breedable outcross offspring would read: OR10101, second generation – OR20101 and on until the 4th generation.
- The name of all originating outcross dogs entered into our database will be prefixed with an asterisks.
- Health Testing Requirements for Progeny of an Outcross Breeding, including levels 1, 2, 3:
- Hip and heart testing is mandatory on outcross progeny to verify health status of the new lines being brought into the gene pool. Thyroid and elbow testing is highly recommended.
